An outdoor space – whether tiny balcony, large or compact patio or an entire backyard – holds massive potential to be so much more than just a backyard, balcony, or patio. With a few smart design choices and a creative touch, it can become transformed into a charming extension of your home.
Whether you’re starting fresh with all new furniture, or wanting a slight refresh with a statement piece or two, in either case, a little planning goes a long way.
Here’s how to thoughtfully design and decorate your outdoor area for maximum comfort, style and function – creating something both functional and warmly inviting. We at Cottage Culture are happy to help, focussing on both the practical steps of measuring, planning and choosing your outdoor furniture materials, and the inspiration of layering the décor and adding your personal touches. Let us explain…
Before buying anything, it’s important to think about your needs and desires. Think about how you would like to use your outdoor space. Are you happy with how you use your space now and just want a refresh, or are you starting from scratch on your vision?
Do you picture hosting lively dinners with friends, enjoying morning coffee with your partner, lounging with a book in a quiet corner, enjoying container gardening, enjoying an evening glass of wine in a secluded spot with a few friends as you watch the sunset or creating a family-friendly hangout? Your lifestyle, how many people you typically have over, and daily routines should guide the overall layout and the type of furniture you choose.
Take the time to measure carefully to understand the space you have and the proportions you can support. Even the most beautiful furniture won’t feel right if it’s too large or cramped for your space, and could hamper traffic flow. Likewise smaller pieces can get overwhelmed and lost in a vast, more open space. This is where Cottage Culture can help, as we know the ideal clearance distances to allow around tables, for example, and we offer free layout services. plotting various furniture pieces in your space to help you visualize the overall look and feel of your space.
Also think about natural light, direction of the sun throughout the day in your space, shade, and views—these will influence where you place different elements.
If you have the room, consider creating distinct “zones”: separating a conversation and entertaining area from a dining area; adding in a cozy secluded seating nook, perhaps for quiet reading; or a space for reclining and lounging in the afternoon sun. You can make use of hedges, fences, pergolas, lattice, or even a row of smaller evergreens in planters to create physical boundaries and provide privacy for each of your spaces.
Furniture is the foundation of your outdoor retreat, and in terms of furniture selection, there are endless options to choose from. Ultimately, your new furniture piece(s) or arrangement can transform your patio or garden into a stylish and functional outdoor oasis. By considering your space, style, and furniture selection, you can create a welcoming and inviting area in which you and your guests will love spending time.
The first question is, are you investing in a complete set or do you wish to mix in a few new statement pieces to refresh the existing outdoor furniture you still love?
If you have the space and are starting afresh, consider investing in a comfortable sofa or sectional for lounging, a dining table and chairs for outdoor meals, and a few accent pieces like side tables and ottomans for added functionality and style.
Also keep your location – whether full-sun area, shady glade or a lake-bank subjected to heavy winds – and climate in mind as the differing furniture materials, teak, all-weather synthetic rattan, poly resin, Polywood and powder-coated aluminum enjoy different maintenance requirements. For example, the sustainable outdoor High-Density Polyethylene (HPDE) POLYWOOD® Furniture, is substantial and heavy enough to withstand strong winds and not blow around, requires only soap and water rinsing to clean and can be left outside in our winters. At the other end, is the sustainable teak furniture, which can be allowed to go silvery grey with the elements, or maintained with it’s beautiful natural wood colour by using a marine teak oil throughout the season. In between are poly resin, all-weather wicker and powder-coated aluminum, some with cushions (ours are either Sunbrella or Olefin, the European version of Sunbrella, both being UV, weather and stain resistant) and some with textilene slings if you wish to avoid dealing with cushions.
Also, don't be afraid to mix and match different materials and textures in your new furniture for a layered and interesting look!
The staff at Cottage Culture is well versed in the furniture materials and can help you assess the best choices for your aesthetic and the maintenance you are willing to undertake.
And in making your choice, never sacrifice comfort: test cushions, check seat depth, and make sure tables sit at a practical height for your proportions. We encourage clients coming into our showroom to try out the furniture, much like Goldilocks! to find their ideal ‘fit’.
Outdoor furniture should be as versatile as your needs. Look for multi-purpose pieces, such as benches with hidden storage, slim profile chairs that are comfy, but don’t take up much space, extendable dining tables, or ottomans that not only double as a coffee table but also serve as additional seating when you have extra unexpected guests. In smaller spaces or where you lack a lot of storage space, folding chairs and benches or stackable chairs and stools can be a lifesaver. Benches also help provide extra seating at dining tables, as they can accommodate more smaller people (think all the kids!) than you might squeeze in with additional chairs.
Don't forget about the importance of outdoor lighting, rugs, throws and various cushions to add warmth and coziness to your space! This is where your personality shines through!
Add an outdoor rug to anchor your furniture, define zones, dampen noise and bring softness underfoot. Layering with cushions and throws creates coziness while letting you experiment with color or pattern, particularly if you are choosing Scani-neutral furniture.
And don’t forget, your landscape forms part of the décor, adding its own colour and movement to your outdoor furniture setting – the greenery, shrubs and flowers are all elements that add texture, dimension and interest to a neutral palette. And of course, plants and planters on a deck or patio are the final touch, instantly making the space feel more welcoming and alive.

If you don’t have shade trees on your property, then a space to get out of the sun’s rays is important to consider in your plan, and the choices include both portable shade and permanent shade, depending on your space and budget.
Consider a deck umbrella, a sun (sail) shade, or an awning, either attached to your home, or one which perhaps forms the ‘ceiling’ of a pergola, to add some necessary respite from direct sun for your company or yourself.
If you find yourself using your space more than anticipated, then as time and budget permit, you may wish to consider adding a permanent shade structure - perhaps attached to your home, or a gazebo to create a focal point in your backyard.
For homeowners in Southwestern Ontario, Sunset Blinds & Awnings—with stunning showrooms in Goderich and Port Elgin—offers everything you need to create the ultimate outdoor retreat. From premium retractable awnings, motorized shades, and weather-resistant screens to beautifully curated displays of Cottage Culture’s outdoor furniture collections, you’ll find endless patio design inspiration. By pairing high-quality shading solutions with stylish, durable furnishings, Sunset Blinds helps you transform your backyard or patio into a luxurious, living space.

Outdoor lighting sets the mood, adds ambience and transforms your outdoor areas, extending the useability of your backyard retreat into the evening.
You can mix different types of lighting. Utilize a combination of ambient lighting such as twinkly fairy lights, strings of Edison-bulb-type lights, or solar lanterns to add a magical touch. Then add in other types, including task lighting for specific areas like pathways, tables and food areas, and candle lanterns or torches for a warm inviting glow. If space allows, consider a firepit for warmth and charm, as well as cooking opportunities to prolong the use of your space earlier and later in the season.
This well-lit space will draw out your outdoor living long after the sun sets.
Don’t forget those small details which make the space feel truly yours. A tray for serving drinks, a cluster of candles, or a small outdoor sculpture or wind chime can bring character to your outdoor space.
Also think about rotating accents seasonally: warm blankets and lanterns in fall, vibrant textiles in summer.

Outdoor furniture is designed to withstand the elements; however, if not under cover, a little care goes a long way. Using covers, storing cushions when not in use, and regular cleaning will extend the life of your investment.
Also, to keep things always looking fresh, you can swap out your accessories every few years without replacing your core furniture pieces.

Designing an outdoor space with new furniture is about blending practicality with personality. By planning thoughtfully, layering decor, and adding touches that reflect your style, you can create an outdoor haven you’ll love spending time in—whether you’re hosting a party or enjoying a quiet morning coffee.
